Jesus ... what?!

We were wandering around chapter 11 of John’s Gospel this week in house-group, the chapter which has the man who wasn’t there as a key character. Off stage and entombed, Lazarus never speaks and only makes a very late and dramatic appearance. Its, chapter 11 that is, other great claim to fame is that it contains the shortest Bible verse, ‘Jesus wept’ – as did, according to John, Mary and the other mourners.

Where's Your Faith?

Jesus does come out with some great pearlers, doesn’t he? Sometimes you just have to wonder where he’s at … he seems to be on a completely different planet to the rest of us. I like the sheer simplicity of saying, ‘I am a Christian,’ and thereby including myself with the two plus billion others who are listed as ‘Christian.’ But, and there’s nearly always a but when it comes to identity issues, the word Christian means different things to different people – assumptions that range from weird to wishy-washy – and it may be that they might not all recognise me as one of their particular grouping.

Unsporty Scripture?

Well, what a successful, sporty summer we have had! The first British winner for the Tour de France, medals galore in the Olympics and Paralympics, and, to top it all, after years of saying, ‘Come on Tim,’ a certain A. Murray goes and wins a grand slam. How long since the last Brit to achieve that success? Surely this splendid island nation of ours is receiving a distinctive sporting blessing from on high? ...
